Liberty Mutual to Honor Artesia Fire Dept.

WHAT:  On Wednesday January 27, Liberty Mutual Insurance will host a ceremony honoring the Artesia Fire Department for multiple programs including “Home Safety Inspections:

"AFD will visit homes & do safety inspections and check the smoke detectors.  AFD will check for slip, trip, and fall hazards & make minor changes to combat these common injuries. We inspect the smoke detectors & replace the batteries or replace them entirely with brand new detectors, which have a 10 year battery life.”

WHEN/WHERE: Wednesday January 27, 2016 from 11AM to 1PM, at the Artesia Fire Station, located at 3300 W. Main St Artesia NM 88210.

DETAILS: AFD leads more than 30 community events and fire prevention education opportunities each year. AFD’s Fire Prevention Education Group is committed to safety and education that is fun and interactive with various parts of Artesia. AFD has a very active role in the schools with quarterly fire drills and Fire Prevention Month education in which AFD taught 213 teenagers how to properly use fire extinguishers. AFD bought a Sparky puppet and robot which are used with the younger aged schools and daycares. Last year we fundraised and donated 100 books that feature fire department & rescue vehicles and with a fire safety theme to them to the public library. The AFD also conducted 1st Aid Training for the local Girl Scouts for their Merit Badges. The AFD is also concerned for Senior Citizen's health and safety. They started a Vial of Life program which allows families to list very specific and detailed information which AFD can locate easily when they respond to an emergency. The family fills out the form & places a sticker in the window of the home so that when we respond, we know to find the detailed form on the refrigerator. The list includes, meds & allergies, how many household members, languages spoken, religious exemptions, and if there are any members who have a hearing or physical disability. For 2015, AFD raised $22,000 for The Infinite Hero Foundation which funds research & medical innovations for Veteran’s with physical & mental health issues. The AFD continues to be committed to giving back to the community of Artesia.

For their dedication to educating the local community about fire safety, Artesia Fire Department will receive the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Community Service and Public Education, as presented by Liberty Mutual’s Personal Lines Rep Jason Ellis from the company’s New Mexico office.
